ORCHARD
GARDENS 210
N Grove Street, Missoula Montana

PROJECT BASICS
homeWORD's latest and most innovative affordable housing development
to-date, Orchard Gardens is 35 units of studio, one-bedroom,
and two-bedroom apartments. It serves income levels below 50%
of the area median income and was completed in January 2006.
INNOVATIONS
Situated on 4.6 acres in Missoula County, the project's architectural
aesthetic is a contemporary rural vernacular that is honest in
function
and
materials yet
obviously
deeply
rooted. Orchard Gardens is designed to foster local food
security as 2 acres of the property are reserved for community
gardens
that are facilitated by Missoula's Garden City Harvest. The
project is also complete with a community barn, orchards, and
a bike trail that connects
to the city's trail system. In
order to cut down on the total amount of asphalt on this semi-rural
site,
the parking
structure for the main building is underground. In support of
sustainable transportation options, Orchard Gardens provides
covered bike parking and all residents are given a free annual
bus pass to Missoula's
Mountain
Line
bus system.
A percent of Orchard Gardens construction budget went to on-site public
art.
