homeWORD RESIDENTS

homeWORD aims to create a true sense of place and community at each development. Community rooms and common areas offer residents a place to gather and connect. The formation of friendships and support networks—integral pieces to self-sufficiency—takes place at homeWORD housing. As one resident said, “My favorite thing about our little community at Fireweed is the woonerf. All year round my neighbors and I find ourselves spending leisure time together: sitting on our front porches, watching the kids on their tricycles and roller skates, dragging out pools for the kids to play in, and building snow people together.”

homeWORD also encourages resident participation through resident meetings. At these meetings, residents work together to organize community activities at the development, which homeWORD helps provide resources for. Past projects organized by councils include community potlucks; building a strawbale, mosaic tiled wall; resident clothes swaps; an apartment crawl; pre-teen gatherings; and book give-aways.
