Did you know that the financial capability of Montanans was ranked worst in the nation by the FINRA Foundation?! Montana is dead last in its savings rate and second-to-last in rainy-day funds, and Montana high school students also continue to fail financial literacy tests. Homeword works to improve the financial stability of Montana families, especially low-income households, through our financial education program, which offers one-on-one financial counseling and monthly "Financial Fitness" classes through our Missoula HomeOwnership Center (HOC). This week, our HOC staff including Financial Fitness Educator, Charmagne Dolphin, Billings Housing Services Specialist, Darrell LaMere, and Operations & Program Director, Kellie Battaglia, are attending the Montana Financial Education Coalition (MFEC) statewide conference in Billings. MFEC strives to improve the personal financial knowledge and decision making ability of Montana citizens by promoting public awareness of the need for personal financial education, and by uniting and building capacity of financial education programs. Charmagne and Darrell are giving a presentation entitled "Financial Planning for Successful Homeownership," and Kellie will be attending sessions about fraud and abuse, school-based instruction, and low and moderate income households.
