Points of Connection

I just returned from the 2013 Montana Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Recreation which was held in Helena, our state Capital, and included two days of education, training, discussion, networking, and having fun.  Although this conference focused on tourism there was a underlying yet clear recognition of the importance of housing and education in our Montana communities, and how housing is linked to the economic success of our state.  We heard from Meg O’Leary, the Director of the Montana Department of Commerce.  Newly appointed, she comes to Commerce with 23 years in the private sector.  She knows her stuff when it comes to economic development and tourism, and she acknowledged she has a lot to learn about housing--recognizing that housing is a vital part of economic development of our state.  As a housing wonk, this is good to hear.  Tourism and recreation contribute significantly to Montana’s economy, and Homeword is here to help provide safe and quality housing for those in the retail and service industries.  The conference allowed me to reflect on the countless ways we love Montana – the people, culture, heritage, resources, environment – and how providing good housing solutions helps us all enjoy living in the last best place.
